Evolution Korea
South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist impulses. Nonetheless, it is healthier than might be expected.
The country is searching for a new paradigm of development. The Confucian culture, which stresses respect for the ancestors as and gender-specific family relationships, continues to influence the society. However, there are signs that a secularist culture is beginning to emerge.
Origins
In prehistoric times the ancestors of the modern Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild food. Then around 10,000 years ago, they began to grow crops such as millet and beans. Evolution in Korea
The Korean peninsula has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The earliest evidence of human settlements are evident in the form of graves lined with stone, with precious items such as amazonite jewellery being buried along with the dead. Megalithic structures, also known as dolmens, constructed from massive single stones, are common throughout the country.
In the first half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognized political state. The peninsula was later controlled by a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE), including Baekje and Goguryeo. The northern region of the peninsula was for a while occupied by the Balhae Kingdom which historians do not consider to be a genuine Korean state.
Following the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, or Several States Period. Among them, Baekje was the most powerful but its dynasty dissolved with the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE, leaving the southern provinces of Manchuria and the western region surrounding the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.
The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate to expand their territories. Silla with the aid of the Chinese, eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.
As Korea enters a post-crisis phase, its development paradigm seems to be in flux. People who are shocked by the enormous cost of the old system are urging an extensive program of liberalization in capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand, champions of the old system are seeking to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and inflating fears over potential job losses.
Academic and policy analysts remain starkly divided as to the extent to these two trends are driving Koreas development towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article assesses developments to date, by looking at five phases of the country's political evolution including democratic illiberalism (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and participatory democracy (2002 to the present). This article also identifies the key elements that are driving these developments.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their views to this group. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that almost a third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there was not enough evidence from science to support the theory 39% claimed that the theory contradicted their religion; and 17% said it was difficult to grasp. The level of doubt is similar to the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from lesser advanced forms of life.
In the past, the anti-evolution movement in Korea was primarily focused on the education of students and the introduction of Christ to them. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. The event was attended by a large number of church leaders and scientists.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, which published its activities and published articles about the scientific evidence supporting creationism. KACR members gave lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.
A KACR success was witnessed at the KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so interested in the idea of creationism that they raised enough money and support to construct a small museum on campus featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.
In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine, CREATION. The magazine covers subjects in the creation science. It also sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also created an organization of local branch offices that offer seminars and talks to schoolchildren and community groups.
Evolution in South Korea
In the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early 20th century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized lifestyle. The hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, was replaced to miniskirts and other fashion elements imported from overseas. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by jazz and rock & roll. In this time the famous samulnori, also known as masked dancing-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed with the accompaniment of shaman drums as well as different musical instruments.
Korea's new development model is being created in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The new regime's main challenge lies in the proper balance between the state-led economic policies and market-oriented ones. Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo, and other areas and also by a migrant from northern China. Baekje, one of the major regional powers in the early 4th Century, expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do south. As a result, it was in frequent confrontation with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders across the border.
The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the development of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He ruled a portion of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival to Goguryeo.
The rule of his was, however, short-lived. After his defeat, Gungye was replaced by a powerful local leader Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935. Later, Baekje was peacefully incorporated into Goryeo as an alternative state. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the conclusion of the Three Kingdoms period. From that point on the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly developed into powerful states on the peninsula and in Manchuria.
